Feeding the world’s growing population
New Zealand’s reputation as a quality food producer is growing.
The Fertiliser Association of New Zealand promotes and encourages responsible and scientifically-based nutrient management.
Options to improve pasture yield in the South Island hill and high country were explored by reviewing 55 trial sites and considering partial gross margins for a range of improvements on different slopes and aspects, based on the costs of seed, lime and fertiliser. Conditions for successful use of subterranean clover, Caucasian, red and white clover, perennial lupins or lucerne were identified. The paper includes a decision tree to support choices. Examination of trials with and without nitrogen fertiliser, supports use of late winter nitrogen fertiliser on specific aspects and conditions.
The Fertiliser Association of New Zealand and Dairy NZ funded development of the Nutrient Management Adviser Certification Programme (NMACP). This industry-wide certification aims to ensure that advisers have the learning, experience and capability to give sound nutrient advice.
